Specialized Investing - Energy and Sustainability
The Riverside Company has decades of successful experience investing in energy and sustainability companies. Riverside’s current portfolio includes companies providing high-efficiency water heaters, environmental cleaning solutions, efficient windows, smart logistics, and high-performance air filters that decrease electricity consumption. Riverside’s Energy and Sustainability team focuses on three categories: Energy Generation, Power and Infrastructure, and Cleantech and Sustainability.
Energy Generation
Riverside has a deep understanding of energy generation. The firm invests in niche providers helping find, procure, and transfer energy resources. Riverside seeks companies providing:
-
Oil and Gas Services. High-growth product and service companies benefiting from secular trends, including rising costs in finding new resources, more complex well formations, growth in unconventional resources, and expanding offshore opportunities.
-
Other Traditional Energy Sources. Companies serving other energy companies, including coal and nuclear power.
-
Renewable Energy. Businesses whose products, services or software are used by wind, solar, hydro, geothermal and biofuels providers.
Power and Infrastructure
Riverside seeks companies providing products and services supporting, maintaining or enhancing the infrastructure that produces and distributes energy and other resources. The firm does not invest directly in infrastructure projects. Riverside seeks:
- Engineered products or services resulting in strong barriers to entry.
- Mission-critical products and services creating customer dependency.
- Recurring revenue through replacement parts, maintenance and repair services, and/or consumable products.
Cleantech and Sustainability
Riverside invests in companies whose products and services enable smarter and more sustainable use of resources. Given increased environmental regulation, Riverside also anticipates strong growth for companies whose products and services test, clean or monitor air, land and water. Riverside seeks companies providing:
-
Energy Efficiency. Products and services improving efficiency of residential, commercial and industrial spaces. These include building automation software, efficient building products, lighting solutions, HVAC systems, high value-add components, smart grid software or services and demand-side management.
-
Transportation. Products and services improving fuel efficiency or reduce pollution of internal combustion engines; outsourced engineering, testing and measurement tools for hybrid and electric vehicles, smart logistics software, and end-of-life vehicle management.
-
Water. Testing and monitoring products used to treat wastewater, “oily water,” ballast water and drinking water.
-
Recycling and Waste. Reverse logistics, e-waste recycling and compliance, specialty hazardous waste treatment services (e.g. medical waste) and waste-to-energy solutions.
-
Energy Storage. Off-grid, back-up power solutions, battery testing, and energy management software or services.
